How to Renew Your Driver’s License in 2022

Here’s a rundown on how to renew your driver’s license (with 10-year validity – if no violations) as May 6, 2022.

Requirements

If you are planning to renew your driver’s license (not expired for more than 2 years), here’s what you will need:

  1. Driver’s license card (Professional or Non-Professional)- Bring your driver’s license card on the day of your ID renewal.
  2. Medical Certificate – Medical certificate must be issued by an LTO-accredited facility or physician.
  3. Comprehensive Driver’s Education (CDE) certificate– The exam can be taken online using the Land Transportation Management System (LTMS) interface or at select LTO offices’ Driver’s Education Centers. You may also take the course and exam at any recognized driving school, although fees will apply. If an applicant does not pass the exam the first time, he or she may retake the course and exam as many times as necessary.
  4. Proof of Billing / Baranggay Certificate – this is only required if you are going to request for any changes in your record, i.e Address.

Step-By-Step Guide on Driver’s License Renewal

This guide only apply to those whose licenses have not been expired for more than 2 years. Licenses that have been expired for more than two years (but not more than ten years) can still be renewed if the theoretical and practical driving exams are passed. If your licensed have expired for 10 years or more, you are no longer eligible for renewal and must re-apply for a student permit.

The steps that I am going to share is based on my experience at the Drivers License Renewal Office (DLRO) at Robinson’s Las Pinas. Be sure that you already have your Medical Certificate and CDE Certificate when proceeding with these steps.

1. Obtain a CDE certificate

You must pass the CDE Validating Exam to obtain a Comprehensive Driver’s Education (CDE) certificate. The CDE validating exam is offered in person at select LTO Driver’s Education Centers or online through the LTMS. Go to LTO’s LTMS Portal to take the exam online.

I highly suggest to take the CDE Validating exam via LTO’s LTMS Portal. Whether you are renewing a professional or non-professional driver’s license, you must have at least 13 accurate answers out of 25 questions (50 percent rating) to pass the exam. Multiple-choice questions make up the majority of the exam. In addition, the exam has no time limit and can be retaken as soon as you fail it.

2. Secure a Medical Certificate

I got mine at DCV Medical & Diagnostic Center. During the medical exam, they will just check your weight, height, blood pressure, blood type, vision and overall medical wellness, NO urine or stool samples are to be collected. As for me, since I do not know what my blood type is, I opted to have the blood typing which costs PHP 120, then the medical certificate itself costs PHP 600.

Just a tip: To save time and avoid long lines, get a medical certificate a few days before your license renewal.

3. Submit the Documents

Proceed to Window 1, hand over your driver’s license along with your medical certificate and CDE certificate. You can opt to print your CDE certificate or just present the screenshot of the certificate so they can validate from their end. Your license information will be retrieved from the system by the personnel. Details will be displayed so that you can confirm whether all of the information is still valid or if there are any change that needs to be done. In my case, I requested for an address change. I provided them a proof of billing that has the address my new address.

4. Payment, Biometrics and Photo

After validating all the needed requirements, I then proceeded to the next window for the payment, biometrics and photo. The license fee for both pro and non-pro license renewal is  Php 589. An additional Php 100 fee was charged to me for the revision of my records. Expect additional fees for late renewal.

Once paid, you will then be asked to scan your fingerprints, have your photograph taken and confirm if your signature needs to be changed or retained.

This can be viewed on your LTO LTMS Portal Account was transaction has been completed.

5. Releasing

Typically, you would have to wait for your name to be called before you proceed to the next window. But when I had my license renewal, after payment and the biometrics, I was asked to immediately proceed to Window 3 (Releasing). Signed the driver’s license release log and was handed my new license with a 10-year validity, and a list of dates of when my Periodic Medical Exam should be.

That’s it. Hope this helps.
